Maltese Flagged Vessel Hijacked Off the Somali Coast

Earlier today, the Maltese flagged vessel Olib G was hijacked off Somalia’s coast. Efforts to establish contact with the 6,375 tonne vessel by the EU Naval force, which is patrolling the area, has so far failed and thus the fate of the 18 men crew is unknown. Lieutenant Colonel Per Klingvall, spokesman for the EU Naval Force NAVFOR confirmed that a helicopter from a US warship was immediately deployed and two pirates have already been identified; however, the existence of other pirates onboard the vessel has not been excluded.
The ship has been hijacked while sailing west in the internationally recommended transit corridor, an area where foreign navies coordinate and patrol the maritime transits.
