Plans for a New Yacht Marina in Xemxija

A press conference announcing plans by the Malta Maritime Authority to develop a new yacht marina in Xemxija Bay recently took place.  Xemxija Bay was identified as a possible site for a marina some years ago.  Although the study had been conducted at a time when demand for yacht berths was not as high as it is today, the authority is now assessing these proposals in view of the increase in demand.  The MMA has a waiting list of around 400 boat owners seeking a permanent berth.  Statistics show that the number of sea craft on the MMA’s Small Ships Register, comprises over 13,000 registered vessels while the present berthing facilities are full or close to full.  Approximately 1650 berths - including those run by the authority and those privately administered - are found in Malta and Gozo. No indication was given as to the number of berths that would be provided once the Xemxija marina is constructed.  This largely depends on the size and a decision has not yet been taken.
