Hail the honorary consul - one of the few who can boast of having played a significant role in the world of ship registration. The island of Malta owes thanks to John Gauci-Maistre for helping make it a major maritime centre and for fostering good relations with other nations. The latter he has done through representing Malta Chamber of Commerce in overseas meetings.
As a result of Graham Greene’s 1993 novel, ‘The Honorary Consul’, the breed got rather a bad name. The book featured an obsequious drunkard of dubious authority named Charlie Fortnum, resident in a fictitious town in Argentina.
People like Gauci-Maistre have helped restore the reputation of the genre. As we shall see, he is busy doing that Europe-wide.
His success on the maritime scene alone is impressive. He has helped Malta amass a giant shipping register from scratch.
Dr Jean-Pie Gauci-Maistre is the Director of GM International Services Limited, a lawyer by profession, who specialises in Maritime Law, including Ship & Yacht Registration, Ship & Yacht Finance as well as Corporate and Tax Law.
