During an official visit to Moscow by the Maltese Foreign Minister, Sergei Lavrov the Russian Foreign Affairs Minister expressed his government’s gratitude towards Malta for the cooperation in resolving the ‘Arctic Sea’ saga. Thanks to this cooperation, relationships between the two countries have been improved even further.

The Arctic Sea was hijacked off the Swedish coast at the end of July and was intercepted by the Russian Navy off Cape Verde Islands. The eight hijackers have been arrested and arraigned before a court in Moscow.

Throughout the entire saga the Maltese liaised with the Russian authorities so that proper investigations could be carried out. The two countries had agreed not to disclose any sensitive information during the investigations so as not to jeopardaise the lives of the crew onboard. The Arctic Sea then reached Malta in October after investigations by the authorities involved were concluded. However, upon reaching Maltese territorial waters, an investigation was carried out by Maltese authorities where no illicit material found. The vessel returned to her owners and has undergone minor repairs in Malta.
