Rewriting History - The Malta Shipyard
20 / 11 / 12
The Malta Shipyard renowned for its skills and its role in the First and Second World Wars as part of the British Empire but debt-ridden for the following decades, is rewriting its history by striving to place itself among the top shipyards of the Mediterranean Sea.
The Malta Drydocks, as it was known, accumulated over €4 billion in debts over its 30 year history as a national corporation. It suffered a fatal blow in 2009 after it could not recover from the losses it made on the Fairmount conversion. The Shipyard was privatised in 2010 and acquired by Antonio Palumbo who also managed shipyards in Naples and Messina.
In two years of operation as a private company, the Malta shipyard has serviced over 500 ships with clients from Greece, Norway and Venezuela amongst others.
Its latest achievement is the ISO 9001 certification. This certification has streamlined operations with other shipyards the group owns and has updated the operations of the Maltese yard to reflect better the market needs.
These developments should place Malta in a better situation to face future crisis as it is managing to diversify its economic base.
