The process of transporting out of Syria its chemical weapons has started with the first quantity of chemical materials loaded onto a Danish ship at the Syrian port of Lattakia. Syria agreed to abandon its chemical weapons under a deal proposed by Russia and hammered out with the United States back in September 2013.  Ms. Sigrid Kaag, head of the U.N. team charged with destroying Syria's chemical weapons, said that “this movement is very important, as it is a first important step in an expected process of continued movement for the onward destruction out of country”.

The international operation behind transporting and destroying the chemicals is quite complex. The first stage is securely packing the chemicals, which is the responsibility of the Syrian army, guarded by armoured trucks provided by Russia and transporting them to the port of Lattakia. The chemicals are then loaded onto two cargo ships provided by Denmark and Norway. The Danish cargo ship carrying the first quantity of chemicals has now moved back out into international waters to wait for more chemicals expected to arrive at the port of Lattakia. Once the cargo ship has taken onboard its full consignment it will sail for an unnamed port in Italy where it will transfer its cargo of chemicals to a US ship, the MV Cape Ray, which is a US Maritime Administration vessel carrying two hydrolysis systems-mobile stations for destroying chemicals.

It is expected that MV Cape Ray will transport the most critical chemicals out into international waters in the Mediterranean Sea, south of Malta, where US Military personnel will break them down in field stations on the ships' internal trailer deck. Less-toxic chemicals will be shipped by Norwegian and Danish vessels for disposal at commercial facilities.

The destruction of Syrian chemical weapons is a long process which is to be completed by the end of June. Safety is of utmost importance.
