ENTRY INTO FORCE OF THE GLOBAL MARITIME DISTRESS AND SAFETY SYSTEM (GMDSS)

Dear Sirs,

As you are aware in terms of the SOLAS Convention of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) all ships of 300 Gross Tons and upwards must comply with GMDSS requirements by not later than 1st February 1999. In this regard your attention is drawn to the fact that unless your vessel complies with this requirement it will be stopped from sailing. Furthermore this office will not be able to extend your ship radio station licence beyond that date. As we forsee delays in meeting this deadline, in your interest we strongly recommend that you install GMDSS equipment on board your ship/s as soon as possible. Also to assist us offer you a more efficient service in the issue and renewal of radio licences it would be appriciated to know;

Which Manufacturer you contacted to complete the GMDSS installation on board your ship/s.
What Make and Type of equipment they offered for installation on board your ship considering its sea area of operation. 
The approximate date they propose to complete the installation. 
Should you fail to furnish the requested information, this Department may experience difficulties in issuing you with GMDSS licences in time and will not be responsible for any delays that may result.
